Food: it's universal!
The purpose of this site is to expose people to the wonders of faraway cultures and international fare. One way to learn about other cultures is to know about what they eat. Food is a reflection of history and different people have unique ways of nourishing the body by preparing foods that are native to their countries. For some people, food is tied to religion. In many cultures, specific foods are served at key religious observances. Or perhaps it is a reflection of a particular season. In some cultures mealtime is the most integral facet of family life, customs, and tradition. Understanding other cultures is important in our "global society" and Culinary Crossing is just one small window through which to learn about them. Enjoy!
A Culinary voyage from your kitchen
Each counrty or region is introduced with a brief history followed by a basic list of key native or traditional ingredients and flavorings. Many "exotic" ingredients can be found in grocery store or specialty shop. Give the recipe a try and get a firsthand taste of global fare!
Note: Many ingredients may not sound familiar to you. When it comes to spices, the array is mind boggling! The site of Gernot Katzer is an excellent source on 113 spice plants including history, chemical properties and complete plant names.
